We are overwhelmed by so many bureaucratic formalities, the real purpose of which is at times nothing short of a mystery, that we end up overlooking regulations that are crucial for traffic safety. One of the most important measures that will come into force in the coming months is contained in EU Regulation 2019/2144, which makes pressure monitoring systems mandatory on heavy duty vehicles and their trailers, sold and placed into circulation as of July 7. This is a vital measure for road safety: in fact, as many operators are well aware, a great number of tyre failures can result precisely from driving with incorrect pressure. On the other hand, while on the latest vehicles it is possible to know almost in real time data such as the state of the mechanical components and consumption, the routes, the driver's behaviour and so on, controls on tyres are still limited, with negative consequences on other aspects of transport management, such as cost per kilometre. Therefore, we deem it necessary for the sector to seize this important opportunity and push for other essential elements to be fully standardized and implemented: firstly, a satellite system able to detect anomalies, because, clearly, if the driver sees a warning light and keeps on driving undaunted, this control system is of little use. The second, equally essential, is to ensure that, in the vast multitude of pressure control systems currently available on the market, the tyre specialist - who is actually the person who looks after the tyres - is in the best possible position to do his job. This will provide a concrete support to road safety through the category's main asset, professionalism.
