Motorbike tyres: dwindling sales in 2023 after a strong 2022

The motorcycle tire market (motorcycles and scooters) in Italy relating to the Specialized Tire Channel (excluding dealers and workshops) ended 2022 with 1.7 million units sold, a significant increase over the previous year (+13.7%) and 166 million euro, +33% compared to 2021. The average price of the tyre (including VAT - without fitting service) at the end of 2022 was 99 euro (+17%). After a rather positive opening in 2023, the spring months, in particular June, witnessed a significant drop in sales that led to a negative first half of the year in volume. However, the market recovered in the month of July which recorded a +18.6% in volumes and +24% in value. Specifically, from January to June 2023 the market recorded sales for 827 thousand tires, down from 2022 (-4.8%) for a turnover of 91.4 million Euro, up from the same period in 2022 (+6.4%). The average price reached 111 euro, another increase (+11.7%). The excellent performance of the month of July, in which 249 thousand tyres were sold for a total value of 27 million euro, determines a flat market by volume (-0.2%) despite the increasing value (+10%) during the first part of the year, January-July 2023. Noteworthy is the increase in the share of motorcycles on road/ off road tyres, the only segment to record a significant growth compared to 2022 (+22%), despite an average price higher than the market (147 euro). Both motorbike and scooter segments were stable. Tyres that can be fitted both front and rear are growing consistently, in the wake of surge in new scooter registrations, +23.15% in July 2023 compared to July 2022 (Confindustria Ancma, National Association of Motorcycle Cycle Accessories). The growth in the on-road/off-road segment goes hand in hand with the increase in motorcycle sales recorded in the first quarter of 2023, which scored a double-digit trend with 38,976 new registrations +18.99% compared to the same period in 2022 (Confindustria Ancma). Among the top sellers we find: Honda Africa Twin 1100, BMW R 1250 GS, Benelli Trk 502, Yamaha Tracer 9 and Yamaha TÈnÈrÈ 700. The month of July was also good for motorbike registrations, marking a +14.51% (Confindustria Ancma). Specifically, the three best-selling on/off road tyres in 2023 are Pirelli’s Scorpion Trail II 150/70 R17 69 V Summer, Scorpion Trail II 170/60 R17 72 W Summer and Scorpion Rally 90/90r 21 54 V Summer, all of which recorded strong growing trends from January to July 2023. Fourth and fifth place always occupied by a Scorpion Trail II model, respectively the 110/80 R19 59 V Estivo and 110/60 R17 72 V Estivo. Among the top 10 on/off road models sold we also find Deli's IíSB-117 90/90R 21 54 R Estivo. In general, 2023 is experiencing a substantial increase in market share and growing trends for emerging brands, companies we must keep an eye on over the next few months.
