Unveiled the new truck range, which clinched the 2017 Truck of the year award. But don’t let the name mislead you: nothing, not even a single component is actually found on the previous series. New engines, new cabin and a new S series without the engine compartment cover

Curtain up. After seven years of waiting, Scania turns its heavyweights inside-out: here are the new R and S series, renewed in both cabin and mechanical layout. To the point that the debut earned Scania the 2017 Truck of the year award, just as it happened back in 2010 with the "old" R series.  "Today - said Henrik Henriksson, President and CEO of Scania last August 23 during the official presentation - we're not just launching a new generation of vehicles but also a unique and intelligent ensemble of sustainable solutions in the form of products and services with Scania being the first company in the industry to offer them, and I am sure I can say this without the fear of being contradicted. We are focused on providing customers with the necessary tools to achieve maximum profitability".  The new cab design was in the pipeline, we can say, since 1999 with the launch of the 4th Series, which later evolved into the first R Series followed by the second R series at the end of 2009.


A sober look

Now, despite the name and appearance seems to suggest a certain continuity with the past, not even a single component is in common with its predecessor. Actually, a new "S" cabin makes its debut: looking at the new cabin one might be fooled into thinking that it looks like the previous model, but in reality there is an added step and no engine compartment cover so the floor is completely flat. Such features make the S cabins best suited for long-range transport. But let's take a look at the new R and S series from the outside. The design of the cabins has been developed by Scania in collaboration with Porsche Engineering, exploiting the synergies guaranteed by the Volkswagen Group. The designers worked around five basic principles: driving comfort, fuel economy, interior layout, safety and maximum reliability. That's why aerodynamics gets down to the nitty-gritty, with a drag coefficiency which, according to the specialists, has been reduced by 7%: a detail that, on its own, guarantees a 2% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous R series. This, however, did not prevent Scania from enhancing the style of the new R series with an imposing grill, modern headlamps, softened by curvy and aerodynamic lines. Overall, the driver's seat has been moved forward (65 mm) and shifted outwardly (20 mm) in order to increase the comfort of the driver and the cabin’s space and layout. The cabin, in fact, is larger by a few centimeters, also thanks to the hump on the back wall.


Sun and steel

The reduction of the front overhang coupled to the severity of Swedish crash tests led Scania to use higher-strength steels. Safety is further guaranteed by the use, for the first time, of side-curtain airbags, an absolute novelty on heavy industrial vehicles to enhance also side impact protection, particularly in accidents with overturning vehicles. Even the larger sunroof can also be used, in case, as an emergency exit. The repositioning of the front axle combined with the new brake system reduces braking distance by 5%. Compared to previous models the dashboard has been slightly lowered to enhance visibility. Furthermore, striking dashboard instruments, able to surprise with their 3D effects, were obtained by moving a few commands on the door panels, which the Swedes guarantee to be absolutely waterproof. Storage compartments too have been completely redesigned and enlarged. The new position of the front axle and new front suspension help to improve road handling and stability. In addition, the new electronically controlled steering support axle reduces the turning circle as well as the weight of the vehicle, besides reducing both tire wear and fuel consumption.


Spotlight on SCR-only technology

The new drive train, according to Scania, will reduce fuel consumption by a further 3%. The new engine layout boasts an advanced injection system and newly designed combustion chambers, plus a new engine heat management system. Confirmed the power range with 520, 580 and 730 HP V8s (16 liter engines) equipped as expected with an EGR exhaust gas recirculation system coupled to an SCR catalyst; alternatively the 6 cylinder engines are all equipped with SCR-only systems, with outputs of 370, 410, 450 and a new 500 HP version (13 liters displacement). In short, the new Scania follows in the same path already taken by some of the other models – such as the G410 and the R450 – from earlier series, which winked an eye to the choice made by Iveco in 2012, that is to focus solely on the SCR. Furthermore, a Scania Opticruise gearbox promises faster and smoother gear changes. All this thanks to the introduction of a gearbox output shaft brake, which allows perfect synchronization with the engine revs. Alternative versions are also available powered by alternative fuels such as HVO or biodiesel.
