New SUV tires from Scandinavia
In the spring of 2020, the Finnish company will launch two tires dedicated to SUVs and crossovers: Nokian Powerproof SUV and Nokian Wetproof SUV.

Good driving stability and excellent grip even at high speed: these are the main features that, according to drivers, tires dedicated to powerful cars such as SUVs and crossovers must possess. To meet the specific needs of this increasingly popular vehicle category, Nokian Tires has developed two new summer tires, which will be available from the spring of 2020: Nokian Powerproof SUV and Nokian Wetproof SUV, both stemming from similar products and equipped with Dual Zone Safety technology which, thanks to the two functional zones in which the tread is divided, guarantee performance both in dry and wet conditions. “We know that summer tires need to work safely and reliably from early spring to late autumn. When developing our new SUV products, special attention was paid to functionality in any weather and under any circumstances”, says Jarno Röytiö, Development Manager at Nokian Tires. Both new products are equipped with Nokian Tires’ unique Aramid Sidewall technology. The sidewall structure contains extremely strong aramid fibres, which makes the tires more resistant to sudden impacts and cuts. Another patented solution by the Scandinavian company, and present on both models are driving safety indicators (DSI). These indicators are located in the centre of the rib of the tire and shows the depth of the grooves, while the numbers printed on the tread relate to the millimetres of rubber left. The numbers disappear as the tire wears out.
Nokian Powerproof SUV
Nokian Powerproof SUV has been designed to adapt to typical summer conditions. the Dual Zone Safetyconcept ensures that the contact surface of the Nokian Powerproof SUV remains exact and predictable. The Dual Zone Safety concept consists of two functional zones. The Power Zone on the tire’s outer shoulder ensures precise handling, while the Wet Safety Zone on the inside maximizes safety on wet roads as the wide-bottomed flow grooves and elliptical Slope Grooves prevent aquaplaning.
The tread proves at home in intensive use at high speed, while its multi-layer structure reduces rolling resistance, saving fuel consumption. Furthermore, the groove design reduces rolling noise (both inside and outside the vehicle) and air resistance, which reduces tire wear. The new Dynamic Grip SUV compound also provides high speed grip thanks to the dense and flexible polymer mesh structure. Aramid Sidewall technology applied to the tire sidewalls guarantees durability and resistance. "The new design and tread structure work in unison to create a contact patch that provides a rational and stable driving feel, and a rapid steering response in both rain and sunshine - explains development manager Röytiö -. Both stable and dynamic, the Powerproof’s excellent grip infuses confidence equally on high-speed motorways and poorly maintained mountain routes".
The Nokian Powerproof SUV has been subjected to several lab tests, both indoors and outdoors, to assess the quality of the product in different conditions. To test the new SUV summer tire, Nokian capitalized on the expertise of former Formula One driver and world champion Mika Häkkinen, who had previously tested the Powerproof in the past. Nokian Powerproof SUV belongs to the Ultra High Performance category and will be available in 29 sizes for 17 to 21 inch wheels, with V (240 km/h), W (270 km/h) and Y (300 km/h) speed ratings.
Nokian Wetproof SUV
Nokian Wetproof SUV has been specifically designed for small and medium sized SUVs. The superb performance of this tire, both on wet and dry roads, is guaranteed by Nokian’s Dual Zone Safety technology with two functional zones. One side of the tire provides good stability on dry roads, while the Wet Safety Zone is designed for wet grip and handling. Aquaplaning resistance is the result of a successful combination of Nokian’s Responsive Lock system, which allows the grooves to bond together as the tire presses against the road surface, with specially shaped grooves optimised for water flow, maximising grip. The smooth grooves also facilitate water flow. The Aqua Hybrid SUV rubber compound, with its advanced polymers and silica structure, is also functional to ensure safety in rainy conditions besides reducing fuel consumption.
Silent Groove Design technology on the sidewalls reduces rolling noise inside and outside the vehicle; reduced air resistance results in improved performance in terms of mileage and tire wear. The structure is reinforced by aramid sidewalls that protect the tire from accidental cuts and impacts. The main grooves are equipped with stone ejectors and the special Grip Claws placed between the tread blocks to increase grip during braking and acceleration. Nokian Wetproof SUV will be available in 27 sizes from 16 to 19 inches with H (210 km/h), V (240 km/h) and W (270 km/h) speed ratings.
