30.9 billion euro spent in maintenance activities in 2017, the fourth consecutive year with a positive sign.

In 2017, Italian motorists spent 30.9 billion euro in car maintenance and repair. A 4.8% growth compared to the previous year when expenditure amounted to 29.5 billion. These estimates emerged from a study carried out by the Autopromotec Observatory and have been processed taking into account a modest increase in the number of times motorist have relied on auto repair workshops (+ 2%), the rising number of vehicles on the road (+ 1.7%) and the fact that the average maintenance and repair prices increased by 1% in 2017 (estimates based on ISTAT data on maintenance and repair prices, the purchasing price of spare parts and accessories, purchasing price of car tires and lubricants).

According to recent figures, in 2017 the cost of car maintenance and repair in Italy confirmed its growing trend for the fourth consecutive year after the contraction experienced in the two-year period 2012/2013. As shown in the table, during the first phase of the crisis dated 2008, expenditures on auto repair activities kept on increasing as the fewer new registrations caused an aging of the National circulating fleet and, consequently, an increase in the demand for assistance. However, the scenario radically changed when, starting from the second half of 2011, the economic recovery stopped and the second phase of the crisis began, which induced many citizens to cut down not only on purchasing cars, but also on regular trips to the workshop. As a consequence the entire sector experienced a dramatic fall in 2012 (-10.5%), which was followed, albeit in smaller terms, in 2013 (-1.1%). The following year, though, spending returned to grow (+ 1.9%) with a 27.1 billion turnover, which progressively increased to 28.4 billion in 2015, 29.5 in 2016 and, finally, to 30.9 of 2017.

Moreover, what needs to be stressed is how, in the meantime, car maintenance and repair activities confirmed their crucial role in an increasingly structured and technological market, where daily business takes place in workshops undergoing a relentless transformation. This situation compels car specialists to constantly upgrade their facilities and update their own knowhow and skills  in order to guarantee the best possible service.
